Resources for Spanish Speaking Patients

Patient Education

Patient education sheets from Nursing Reference Center can be printed in English or Spanish. To print in Spanish, simply click on the Spanish hyperlink next to "Languages Available" at the upper left corner of the page.

Drug Information
Patient leaflets can be printed in Spanish through Pharmacy OneSource. Log in and search for a drug as usual. To print the information in Spanish, click on "View Spanish Leaflet" in the upper right corner of the page.

On the Web

Consumer Health InformationMany of the consumer health information links listed on the Jameson Library Portal are also available in Spanish. Here are some examples:

MedlinePlus: A service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, MedlinePlus provides trusted health information. You can switch between English and Spanish by clicking on the "English" or "Spanish" button at the top left corner. Many of the handouts available in the English site say "also available in Spanish." The start of another school year is right around the corner. Now is a good time to brush up on your study skills and get organized. Here is a free tool to help:

Flashcard Exchange
Flashcard Exchange is an Internet application where you can create, study, print and download flashcards. It currently has more than 31 million flashcards and supports all languages with many subcategories of words including science and medicine.

The flashcards are created by the Internet community, which means it is interactive. You can create your own flashcards and share them with others. There are sections that require payment to access, but much of the site is a free service.

New Hospital Engagement Guide

A new online resource from HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) gives hospitals four evidence-based strategies to engage patients and families in their care. The field-tested strategies outlined in AHRQ's new Guide to Patient and Family Engagement in Hospital Safety and Quality can help hospitals make care better and safer by bridging the communication gaps among patients and families and their health care providers.

Read the Pennsylvania Code and Pennsylvania Bulletin Online

The Pennsylvania Code is an official publication of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It contains regulations and other documents filed with the Legislative Reference Bureau under the act of July 31, 1968 (P. L. 769, No. 240) (45 P. S. §§ 1102, 1201—1208 and 1602) and 45 Pa.C.S. Chapters 5, 7 and 9, known as the Commonwealth Documents Law (CDL). It consists of 55 titles.

The Pennsylvania Code and Pennsylvania Bulletin are available at no cost online.

The most recent addition to the library's reference collection is the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This book is for library use only to ensure it is available in the library when you want to read it.

Eponyms
This app for students gives a short description of more than 1,700 common and obscure medical eponyms (e.g., Rovsing's sign, Virchow's node).

IDdx
Users can find lists of matching infectious diseases by using the disease search criteria (99 signs & symptoms, 39 epidemiological factors, and 16 regions of the world). The user can see all the symptoms associated with a disease or see all the diseases associated with a symptom.
